The Spinning Leaves are a fantastically talented duo that play acoustic music with flair and warmth and vibrancy. This ain’t your old folk. It’s new folk steeped in tradition for the modern world

The Spinning Leaves has proven to be an unmistakable part of the new folk phenomenon in Philadelphia and beyond. Their sound, for one, is a whistle at the start of a great sprint, the bell of human musical freedom: spurts of gang vocals, slide guitars, dulcimers, and foot stomps over America melodies.
How do you explain “loose but tight” or ” melodically funky” ? You don’t - you just point to The Spinning Leaves, a fresh new band from Philly that I find indescribably delicious.

MDR + XPN, 6 initials and 2 icons (I can call us that, right?) of the Philadelphia music scene might be joining forces. This sounds like such a great idea to get us two together, considering we’re only separated by about 2 blocks, and I wonder how it’s never happened before, but, hell, never mind that, I’m just glad it could happen. So what do a record label and a radio station do together (besides payola)? Oh, let me count the ways…
Now these are just a few ideas, but let a boy dream. First, I think the first thing that has to happen is some sort of special program about MDR on any of WXPN’s stations, be it Y-Rock, any of their future internet stations, or the mother ship itself, WXPN. A strong connection based on Philadelphia needs to be the foundation of this as well. XPN has their general programming like any station, but also does specialty shows and I think MAD Dragon should have one. It would be great to have it hosted by a current MAD Dragon employee/student. The host would obviously need some radio experience or it would turn out as quality as those saturday morning cartoon “hosts” that were 10 year old kids awkwardly reading cue cards during the breaks to introduce the next show. Of course, since I have been on radio for 3 years, am working for 2 stations now, and have been around my dad, a professional radio DJ for 40 years, I will take the leap of faith and say I’ll be that first DJ! Getting back to the actual show, I think it should be called like the MDR Showcase or something as we should be playing MDR artists. Now since we do not have the source material to fill a weekly radio show for a long enough time, I propose following the Philly connection again and supplementing our show with small Philly bands that MDR likes, to the point that it would feel almost like A&R on the radio, which would be a cool idea.
Another idea would be to have some sort of like music student educational/talk show where we talk about the industry, the future of the industry, and everything else with our perspective. The show would then be peppered with the DJ’s and guests playing some of their favorite current artists or local artists.
Those ideas bringing MDR content to WXPN, but what the other way. What can WXPN bring to MAD Dragon? I think for this to relationship to work it needs to “Fair and Balanced,” but unlike FOX News, our efforts actually needs to be those things. As a radio station they get tons of albums/EP’s/etc in their mailbox all the time, now granted they don’t go through them all, but they do look at them and like some of them. It wouldn’t be any conflict or convergence of interest, so I think they could send bands that they like that are unsigned our way. That way I think we could build a better band as both a station and label. I don’t think anything like that has ever happened.
I could go on, but I’d be here forever. The possibilities are endless!!!

2010, another year, another CMJ, and this one again goes by without me in attendance. :( I had held out hope that I would be able to go this year mostly because I’m a senior and I remember being turned down last year because I wasn’t a senior. I’m more or less pissed off I couldn’t go this year and mostly only because I’d kill (maybe?) to see Salem live.
